Early Childhood Studies
The Area of Study
Our society has, increasingly, become aware of the importance of the
first years of life. The growth and early experiences of young children
are critical not only because of the richness of the early years, but
because of the centrality of these years to later life. In addition
to teacher education programs, the Institute of Early Childhood offers
the opportunity to study a range of subjects which can lead to a Bachelor
of Arts degree with a major (coherent study) in early childhood. A specialisation
in the understanding of young children (from birth through to age eight)
enables graduates to work in a variety of areas including policy development,
community services, and the media. The Institute provides units of study
which consider the development of children (including those with disabilities)
within the family and social context; young childrens learning
and experience of the arts, literacy, maths, science and technology
is explored, as well as the management principles and skills necessary
for leadership positions in children's services.
This degree will not, therefore, qualify graduates to teach in educational
settings with young children, but will enable them to specialise in
early childhood studies. It may supplement study or experience in other
social sciences including behavioural science, psychology and sociology.
The specific requirement for the completion of the degree is the completion
of a combination of units which comprise at least 12 credit points from
ECH units at 300 level or above. This will include the completion of
appropriate prerequisites at 100 and 200 level. These requirements do
not include the undertaking of Reflective Practice (supervised practice
teaching).
