Primary Teaching
The Area of Study
Macquarie University has made a major contribution to the education
of primary school teachers through its undergraduate and postgraduate
teacher education programs.
Macquarie's teacher education program has several aspects that, while
not unique in Australia, are special features of the program. Thus,
students take their education units concurrently with their other studies
rather than subsequent to them. In undertaking their professional units
in the third and fourth years of their programs they work in cooperation
with a "master teacher" in a school over the year.
Students planning to teach in primary schools spread their major studies
widely under the BA DipEd, but include a major study in education. All
intending teachers, towards a BA DipEd, take units in education of two
kinds: firstly, those related to issues, theories and problems of education,
and secondly, units in curriculum, methodology and the practical skills
of teaching. The BA DipEd may be taken at pass or Honours level.
Students interested in school counselling later in their careers are
advised to complete the BA-Psychology Dip Ed as their first degree.
