Macquarie University has made a major contribution to the education of secondary school teachers
through its undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programs.
Macquarie's teacher education program has several aspects that, while not unique in Australia,
are special features of the program. Thus, students take their education units concurrently with
their other studies rather than subsequent to them. In undertaking their professional units in
the third and fourth years of their programs they work in cooperation with a "master teacher"
in a school over the year.
For students who want a secondary teaching qualification, the School offers combined programs
leading to the award of the BA DipEd, BSc DipEd, and BA-Psych DipEd, where the academic degree in
arts, science or arts & psychology, and professional qualifications are completed in four years.
Those planning to teach in secondary schools specialise in their teaching subjects and choose the
degree most appropriate to those subjects. All intending teachers take units in education of two
kinds: firstly, those related to issues, theories and problems of education, and secondly, units
in curriculum, methodology and the practical skills of teaching. The BA DipEd may be taken at
pass or Honours level.
Macquarie University and other students who complete a first degree other than those listed above,
may apply to complete the Graduate Diploma in Education for a teaching qualification if they have
academic studies in one of our teaching methodologies. Information is available from the
downloads page.
